Born in Gary, Indiana, on September 7, 1934, Ed grew up with a strong sense of duty and adventure. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Following his military service, he pursued his passion for education, graduating from Western Michigan University and embarking on a lifelong career dedicated to shaping young minds and lives.
Ed was a respected teacher, Driver's Education instructor, and coach in several Michigan communities, including Springport, Shelby, Brighton, and South Lyon schools. A true leader in local sports, he pioneered the wrestling program at Brighton High School, building a foundation for generations of athletes to come. Over the decades, he mentored countless student-athletes on the football fields, wrestling mats, and softball diamonds, instilling in them the values of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance.
Beyond his professional life, Ed was a man of many passions. He was an avid reader with a particular fondness for World War Il history. He loved the outdoors, whether he was camping or casting a line while fishing. Alongside his beloved wife, Barbara, Ed traveled the world. Together, they shared 67 beautiful years of marriage, went on numerous cruises, and thoroughly enjoyed their retirement visits to Mazatian, Mexico.
Ed's greatest legacy, however, is his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Zachar; his children, Ed (Sandy) Zachar, Jim (Lisa) Zachar, Steve (Laura) Zachar, and Sue (Jeff) Willi; his ten grandchildren, Stephanie, Andrew, Mary, Ed, Micheal (Ami), Jamie (Mike), Nikki (Kyle), Jessica, Joe, and Barbara; and his six precious great-grandchildren, James, Wyatt, Charlotte, Raelynne, Cali, and Crew.
He will be deeply missed by his family, former students, athletes, and the many friends he made throughout his vibrant life.
